Ubiquity Screen-Reader Install

This is an installation using the Screen-Reader as done by a visually blind individual. Please cover your monitor, lay it face down or turn it off during this installation. You will require speakers or headphones to hear the screen-reader. As you press Enter to continue on each page, it can take several minutes to advance to the next installer page.

  1. Start your machine with the install media in place
  2. Wait for the drums
  3. Press Ctrl+s to start the screen-reader

  4. Press Alt+Tab to change to the installer

  5. Press Up or Down arrow to select your language(default is English)

  6. Press Tab once to "Try Ubuntu"

  7. Press Enter

  8. Wait for the Desktop to begin the installation.
  9. Press Super+1 to begin the installation. Super is the left windows key

  10. Use up-arrow and down-arrow to select the language you want to the installation to use

  11. Press Enter

  12. Use up-arrow and down-arrow to hear the options and spacebar to select them

  13. Press Enter

  14. Use up-arrow and down-arrow to hear and select partitioning options

  15. Press Enter

  16. Press up-arrow and down-arrow to select the drive to install Ubuntu on

  17. Press Tab three times

  18. Press Enter

  19. Press Tab

  20. Select country either by typing in the name of the country or city or timezone
    • WARNING: time zones are not read by the screen-reader; the default should be fine
  21. Press Tab until you are on Continue

  22. Press Enter

  23. Check your keyboard layout is correct or alter
  24. Press Enter

  25. Input your initial user details and password /!\ Note admin can not be used - it is a dedicated Linux User

  26. After entering "Confirm your password"

    • Press Tab
      Press up-arrow for auto-login
      Press Enter to begin the installation

  27. Once the installer tells you it is finished, Restart the system now by pressing Enter

  28. Wait a few seconds for the cd drive to quit spinning, remove the disc and press Enter

After restarting, at the desktop, you must restart again. This will start the screen-reader. It will then start at login.
