- Start your machine with the install media in place
- When you see the aubergine screen with an icon at the bottom, press any key to get the menu
Select your language and press Enter
Press F6 and use the down arrow to get to Free software only and press Enter
Press ESC to dismiss the menu
Press Enter over the Try Ubuntu without installing option
- Wait for the desktop to start
Double click on the Install Ubuntu icon
Once Ubiquity starts, on the Welcome screen click on Continue

- Verify that the state of the check marks match with the state of your system:
- Your system have at least the amount a space indicated
- Is plugged to a power source
- Is connected to the Internet
Click on Continue
- Verify that the state of the check marks match with the state of your system:
Screen Allocate drive space:
Select Erase Disk and install Ubuntu
Click on Continue
Screen Erase disk and install Ubuntu:
Verify that the drive selected on the Select drive list correspond to the drive on the chart (e.g /dev/sda) and that the full drive space is allocated
Click on Install Now
Screen Where are you?:
- If your system is connected to the network, verify that the preselected timezone correspond with your timezone and the city indicated in the text box match a city from your area (e.g London)
- Verify that you can select another timezone by clicking on the map and that the corresponding city is displayed in the text field.
- Verify that you can enter the name of a city in the input field and a drop down list opens with a list of items matching the name you entered. Select one of them
Once you selected a timezone/city click on Continue
Screen Keyboard Layout
- Select a Keyboard layout and a variant and verify it is correct by typing charecter in the test area.
Click on Detect Keyboard Layout and answer to the questions. Verify that the proposed keyboard correspond to you keyboard.
Click on Continue
Screen Who are you?
Input your initial user details and password
Note admin can not be used - it is a dedicated Linux User Click on Continue
- Wait for the installation to proceed and that a slideshow is displayed during the installation.
- Verify that the slides change automatically and that you can navigate between them by clicking on the arrows on both side of the slide.
Once the installer has finished choose to Restart now
Remove the disc and press enter
- Allow the machine to reboot, login and check the system installed correctly.
Verify that neither the restricted nor multiverse archives have been enabled:
$ grep "restricted\|multiverse" /etc/apt/sources.list | grep -v "^#"
should return nothingVerify that the linux-restricted-modules package has not been installed:
$ dpkg -l linux-restricted-* | grep -vE "^[a-z]n"
should return no packages
